10 Things We Know About Cancer That We Didn’t Know 10 Years Ago

As Siddhartha Mukherjee detailed in his Pulitzer Prize-winning “biography of cancer,” The Emperor of All Maladies, humans may have lived with cancer for millennia but, until recently, we knew next to nothing about it. Now, it seems the every day brings promising new research on cancer’s causes, its weaknesses and ways to thwart it. Some developments, such as vaccines for cervical cancer, are now established; others, such as experimental therapies using viruses, are still very much experimental. We also know now that restraint in diagnosing and treating cancer is better than aggressive therapies that carry harmful side effects.

We compiled a list of cancer breakthroughs and new directions that have happened in recent years (though some of them obviously have roots in earlier decades).

1. Vaccines can protect against some cancers

Researchers have known for years that viruses cause some cervical and liver cancers. But immunizing people against those viruses, and thus immunizing against cancer, has changed the prevention landscape. In 2006, the first vaccine for some forms of the human papilloma virus (HPV) – which has been shown to cause most cervical cancers – won approval from the U.S. FDA. The CDC now recommends that 11 and 12 year-old girls receive the vaccine, Gardasil and Cervarix, which has also been shown to protect against anal, vaginal and vulvar cancers.

2. Vaccines can also fight cancer

In 2010, the FDA approved Provenge, which can be used to treat advanced prostate cancer. The “vaccine” is made by activating the patient’s white blood cells by exposing them to a protein in prostate cancer cells. The cells are reinjected into the patients after three days in an attempt to fight the disease. It is not a cure, however, and the vaccine can only be used for men with a particular type of cancer that is no longer responding to hormone therapy. Men who received the vaccine lived four months longer, which health officials consider a good start.

3. Viruses may be useful in fighting cancer

Cancer cells jettison genetic code in their rush for unchecked growth, including machinery that protects against viruses. Canadian researchers have capitalized on this weakness in cancer cells by using a genetically modified version of vaccinia – a relative of smallpox – to attack tumors but leave healthy cells unharmed. In early studies, the vaccines have shown promise in attacking metastatic tumors. Other researchers have used other viruses to attack aggressive brain tumors called gliomas. It’s too early to declare this an effective therapy, but it’s promising.

4. Some cancers may be better left untreated

In a surprising turn, Swedish researchers in 2010 found that men with early stage prostate cancer rarely die from the disease. And those men who didn’t receive treatment were only slightly more likely to die from the cancer. The idea that some patients might do better with “watchful waiting” and that the side effects of treatment – surgical removal of the prostate, radiation – might be worse than leaving the disease alone was shocking to some. Still, this discussion is by no means settled, since living with untreated prostate cancer is stressful and there is considerable gray area in determining whether a cancer is early stage or more aggressive.

5. The genome may hold the key to some cancers

As scientists apply sophisticated tools to studying the human genome, they have learned about what genetic variations are associated with cancer. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic have found that two common genetic variations on one gene can lead to a higher risk for lung cancer in people who have never smoked. Other variations have been associated with certain brain cancers. This information could, down the road, lead to better cancer prevention.

6. The “gene desert” also holds clues to cancer

Scientists have thought for years that the human genome was 98 percent junk, or noncoding, DNA. Recent research has shown that this area could actually contain important information that can have as yet unexplained influence on cells.

7. Cancer screening is a double-edged sword

Here’s a surprising statement: all screening tests do harm, but some may also do good as well. Harm from a screening test can be the stress associated with a false positive mammogram result or an unnecessary biopsy. And over the course of 10 years, the cumulative risk of a false positive is almost 50 percent, according to an widely cited study. In 2009, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force revised its guidelines to recommend that women under 50 should not get routine screening mammograms. Women should instead make their own decisions about the risks and benefits of screening, according to the Task Force.

8. It’s tough to tell sometimes what causes or prevents cancer

We’ve always known this, but in the past decade, the science on what is and isn’t carcinogenic has gotten complicated. Take the example of cell phones: does the nonionizing radiation from phones lead to brain cancer? The World Health Organization has said that radiofrequency fields are “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” Other organizations, including the CDC have concluded that the available evidence does not support a link. The British newspaper Daily Mail even has a website that catalogs all of the stories it has published on every food, object or activity that causes or prevents cancer. Sometimes it’s hard to know.

9. Targeted therapy is a potent weapon in the war on cancer

Targeted cancer therapies block cancer’s growth by attacking certain molecules in tumors. This approach is distinct from traditional therapies that attack all rapidly dividing cells. The best known targeted therapy, Gleevec, was approved by the FDA in May 2001 and is now approved for ten cancers. At the time, Time magazine called it “new ammunition in the war against cancer.” These therapies can give physicians a better way to tailor specific treatments for different kinds cancer.

10. Low-tech treatments can work wonders

A technique that involves brushing vinegar on a woman’s cervix to reveal precancerous spots then freezing the spots off with a supercooled metal probe could save tens of thousands of lives in poor and middle income countries. This low-tech treatment, called VIA/cryo was developed at Johns Hopkins medical school and is simpler and less expensive than a Pap smear. It also doesn’t require women to be reachable if a biopsy from an abnormal Pap smear discovers precancerous lesions.

and with all the research on the medical side of cancer, still not enoughmoney and research is awarded in the alternative healthcare world to prove its’ benefits as well !

Actually the NIH did a huge study on the effects of homeopathic remedies in the past few years. The ONLY thing that was effective was ginger for nausea. Contrary to what anti-mainstream health advocates would say, those of us in the scientific research field would LOVE to have homeopathic and alternative medicine actually be effective for something. That would make our jobs of finding compounds to treat diseases that can be tolerated by the human body so much easier.

      • Barbara Mayfield

About homeopatic remedies against cancer: first of all, ginger is not a homeopathic remedy – it’s an herbal remedy. Second, please see the paper published by the MD Anderson Cerner about their own laboratory study. It shows that the main remedies in Homeopathy against cancer do kill cancer cells without harming healthy cells, and they recommend more funding and more studies. Why did this not make front page news?
In my own experience with the disease, I found that not one single western MD or nurse was the least bit interested to even read the study. They glazed over at the mention of the word Homeopathy. It seems to me, from my personal experience, that the western medical establishment or the AMA has not one bit of interest in finding ( or simply accepting one that already exists) a cure/remedy/treatment that does not involve their expensive poisons and radiation and is not billable by them.
Check out the study for yourself. For me, I’m woking with a homeopathic physician.

        Abstract
The use of ultra-diluted natural products in the management of disease and treatment of cancer has generated a lot of interest and controversy. We conducted an in vitro study to determine if products prescribed by a clinic in India have any effect on breast cancer cell lines. We studied four ultra-diluted remedies (Carcinosin, Phytolacca, Conium and Thuja) against two human breast adenocarcinoma cell lines (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231) and a cell line derived from immortalized normal human mammary epithelial cells (HMLE). The remedies exerted preferential cytotoxic effects against the two breast cancer cell lines, causing cell cycle delay/arrest and apoptosis. These effects were accompanied by altered expression of the cell cycle regulatory proteins, including downregulation of phosphorylated Rb and upregulation of the CDK inhibitor p27, which were likely responsible for the cell cycle delay/arrest as well as induction of the apoptotic cascade that manifested in the activation of caspase 7 and cleavage of PARP in the treated cells. The findings demonstrate biological activity of these natural products when presented at ultra-diluted doses. Further in-depth studies with additional cell lines and animal models are warranted to explore the clinical applicability of these agents.

“Men who received the vaccine lived four months longer, which health officials consider a good start.”

So.. how do health officials KNOW that these men wouldn’t have lived the extra 4 months anyway? It doesn’t seem like that’s enough time to attribute to Provenge. 4 years, yes.. but 4 months? It’s not like ALL prostate cancer patients die at exactly 2 years (or whatever) after diagnosis.

    • Matthew Van Dusen

Lived longer compared to a control group.

    • Mary

Most cancer treatments cause an immediate effect, like disappearance of a tumor, but often don’t affect mortality. It’s been a disappointing feature of a lot of cancer research. This is why 4 months is encouraging.

  3. Susan M. Piergeorge, MS, RD

Whether one agrees or not with these findings, its interesting information for us to think about.

100 years ago, medicine guessed that bacteria could cause cancer. Today, medicine accepts that 1 exposure to Syphilis or Gon. is sufficient to inflame, mutate healthy tissue in the creation of Prostate Cancer. Today many surgeon’s guess that common viruses such as Herpes Family can cause cancer throughout the organs of the body…Minimal research suggests that eating cruciferous vegetables thwart and retard the the Herpes virus and consuming probiotic capsules retards Candida of the digestive system and prevents cancer, Good Luck Everyone!!!

Candida is proving to be BIG Precursor to any Cancers…. Acidic PH for an extended period of time actually causes Candida to grow & from what we have studied “all” Cancer Patients have a Acidic PH levels. So, eating a diet that is 60% alkolaid can pretty much keep you on the safe side especially in the morning, Sugar is a Killer FOLKS.!
Mold & Fungus is the start of how everything decays including us……They can ONLY grow in an acidic Enviroment, same with Cancers, all prescriptions are Acidic, I for One would be VERY careful with any ingesting of chemical Compounds, funny the more Prescription drugs people have been taking in the last 50 years, so has the Cancer rates gone up along with added chemicals in our food, water, home & Air we breathe…..

    • Captive Audience

Then we are all at risk because Candida is part of the human body’s ecosystem.

I think that the pharmaceutical companies are crooks. They will never allow a cure to be found, there is too much money made in the “treatments”. There have been no cures found for anything ever sense they cured polio. They learned quick that if they find a cure they cut into their profits.

    • Phil

      @taxpayinghorse
Your comment is completely false, not to mention ignorant. First of all, Polio vaccine didn’t “cure” the disease. It does prevent it.

Since that time numerous other diseases have been eliminated or severely inhibited by pharmaceutical progress. Smallpox is now officially unknown anywhere on the planet. Gardicil is extremely effective at preventing cervical cancer. Ulcer surgery is very rare now because of advances in acid blockers. HIV/AIDS is much less deadly now because of dramatic advances in drug therapy. There are thousands more. Try a bit of reading

People like you find a conspiracy around very corner. Count your blessings.

    • Dave Jones

Understand-we are continuing to see suffering and lost love ones occur as a birth right. Still, after all the decades, the agonizing slow pace of scoring a complete cure is an eternity away.

Private abundance generally, no guarantee, gets results. There should be a race to anyone proven to find the cure awarded a billion dollar prize or sustainable amount to get the job done. That”s about a couple of months we taxpayers fund fighting the war. And, we would stop our warriors deaths, disabilities, and broken families.

This would bring the resolve to one and possibly a nearer end to this insidious mystery called cancer..

    • GI Doc

There are plenty of examples to refute your argument. Off the top of my head, I can give you 2 examples from different drug companies to prove your statement false. Both Helidac and Pylera cure ulcers caused by H. Pylori. Before the early 1990′s we did not know about the link between H. pylori and ulcer disease. Once that link was discovered, the drug companies were more than eager to offer the cure.

Saying that drug companies suppress the production of curative medicine to drive up profits is like saying GM purposefully made crappy cars that would not last long and force you to buy new ones every 3 years. Even if true, it didn’t prevent Toyota from making better cars and stealing their market share away. The same is true for a drug company that would sit on a curative product; once the patent expires, any other company can make that product.

      • Donna

The fact is that the man that discovered H Pylori in researching other issues using cadavers, could not get his research published. He tried repeatedly and was ignored by everyone that could help get the word out. Only after he spent his own money going to conventions and passing out the information to individual doctors did this important discovery get into mainstream medicine. No one was eager to give up the lucrative business of treating ulcers. They did not want to cure them. All of this is fact and easily discoverable.

    • Neva Willis

With the cost of prescription medicine out of sight, one wonders if the story above isn’t true. We talk about cures when people are dying because they CAN’T AFFORD MEDICINE that would keep them alive. And that is the plain and awful truth. Don’t forget it.

    • diane brocker

just fyi there is no cure for cancer.

      • diane brocker

I’m sorry I actually meant “polio”

    • Herb

They didn’t “cure” polio; they prevented it. Vaccines do not cure anything.

Perhaps, some day someone will establish the molecular basis for the success of the Gerson therapy and its strict diet with coffee enemas. (See The Gerson Therapy – The Proven Nutritional Program for Cancer and Other Illnesses by Charlotte Gerson and Morton Walker, DPM; and A Cancer Therapy – A Summary of thirty years of clinical experimentation by Max Gerson, MD).

  9. Dave Snavely

Aethlon Medical can filter cancer exosomes from the blood (in addition to many viruses) and started selling assays for research.

  10. Shane

Nice promotion of vaccines. No matter how many natural methods come out to treat cancer they never make the front page of anything. The law says only a drug can be used to cure, prevent or treat a disease.

  11. Choo Hader

#1 – That cannabinoids from the cannabis plant are tumor inhibitors, can shrink tumors and cure cancer.
#2 – That chemotherapy is useless poison, does more harm than good, and is archaic.
#3 – That the ACS, AMA, FDA are all lackeys for Big Pharma, have no interest in natural cures, and do not operate in best interest of patients. Would kill you with profitable poison before ever curing you naturally.
#4 – Learned that gold and silver bullion is REAL MONEY and govt paper is just worthless promises from worthless liars

    • Ray

I agree with your post 100%. The AMA,ACS, and FDA have no interest in finding a cure for cancer. Why?If a cure was found, that would put a lot of Cancer doctors out of work and a lot of cancer centers would close down.Billions of dollars would be lost lost. The AMA and the Government(FDA) will not let that happen.Thats right folks, the AMA and the government(FDA)want you to get cancer.if they had an interest in preventing cancer, they would regulate the fast food, food processors, and tobacco industry more closely.

I was a DES exposed baby. Born 1954. Dr.Duane Townsend was studying the relationship with DES and cervical cancer. A colpolscopy using vinegar was used. This was in the mid 70′s. Been around a long time!!!! I had some freezings.

  13. Beth Goodtree

I cured myself of Stage 4C metastacized Ovarian Cancer altho’ I was given only days to a few weeks to live. Because I have an educational background in science, I felt that I might be able to find a vulnerability in cancer cells that has been overlooked. And I did — mostly, I think, because it is not seen as a vulnerability per se, just a trait.

I found that cancer cells can only use carbohydrates to survive. They cannot use proteins or fats. All those blood vessels they develop are to provide it with carbs as fuel. And so I went on a carb-free diet for the first month. Then I limited my intake of carbs to 10 grams per day, a miniscule amount. Such a diet is hard to stick to since so many foods have hidden carbs, such as onions. But I looked up the carb count of everything before it went into my mouth.

My doctor had prescribed chemo, which I did begin, for when I first learned of my cancer, I had no idea about it’s dependence upon carbs. Also, I was way too far gone for a diet to work on it soon enough to save my life in the short term and give the diet a chance to kill of all the cancer in the long term. But in the end, I only had half the chemo treatments. My cancer was long gone by that time. And after the cancer was said to be ‘miraculously’ cured, I stayed on the carb-free diet for another 6 months just to be sure.

As a (former) scientist, I cannot in good conscience advocate a cancer patient to ignore doctor’s advice and just use my discovery. For one thing, my diet has only been tested on one person — me. And even though every doctor who has seen me calls it a miraculous cure, and even though it makes absolute scientific sense, until my diet has been established as a replicable fact, you should follow your doctor’s advice. However, you CAN include a carb-free diet with your treatment plan with no harm to yourself or interference with your treatment, no matter what it is.

Beth you’re not alone. We were able to extend my mother’s life 3 years by using diet and minerals. Ultimately, she didn’t die of pancreatic cancer, she died of gastritis (an artifact from her surgery 4 years prior). We couldn’t go totally carb-free because she’d lost too much weight. But that’s what I’d do if it happened to me.

    • Bonnie Segard, Rn, LCSW

Thank you for your inspiring story!
I wonder if you might have a copy/and/or guidelines of the diet you followed for 10 gm carb diet? I want to reduce the acidity in my body . At this point I am cancer-free but I have a strong family hx of the disease and I am avery active 70 yrs old. I may not keep to the restrictive 10 gms, in fact will increase it some but in following the basic diet requirements, I may prevent the ca occurring in the first place.
Thank you for any information you can provide.

The 10 things we know about cancer is that the research areas are so disjointed and individualized that very little has occurred to cure the enormous number of people who are afflicted and dying from it. How much has the Susan B. Koman foundation taken in for their cause with so little to show for it in cures. Funding mammographies doesn’t cure the problem. Anyone ever look into these people’s books?

I AM ALWAYS LOOKING FOR INFORMATION ON ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS TO HEALTH PROBLEMS AND BETHS NO CARBOHYDRATE INFORMATION IS VERY INTERESTING. ALSO I LIKE THAT ALL THE PEOPLE WHO COMMENTED TYPED THEIR MESSAGE IN ENGLISH THAT IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND. MOST OF THE TIME THE SPELLING IS SO BAD AND WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING IS IN SOME FORIEGN LANGUAGE (EVEN THOUGH IT ISNT) I CAN’T UNDERSTAND IT.

  16. Tom Diehl

First of all, regardless of one’s professional background (doctor, research scientist, biologist, oncologist, or average U.S. citizen), I believe it is untrue and foolish to say that there IS NO CURE FOR CANCER! Rethink what you are saying. The truth is that the cure has not yet been discovered. There is a cure, just as many other diseases were cured in the 20th. and 21st. centuries, for which there was no KNOWN cure 400-500 years ago. Our words are powerful and effect our subconscious mind. Do not say that there is no cure! Our descendants may very well live in a time which experiences the cure!

Next I would like to address something which was not mentioned yet. We all have cancer cells in our bodies. Our immune system attacks these cells and destroys them. When our immune system is weakened, it has a very difficult time keeping up with the rapidly multiplying cancer cells. There is much that we can do to keep our immune system strong and healthy. Stress is one of the most harmful elements which weaken our immune system.

Does it not seem alarming that we have the highest rate of cancer in the world? The American Cancer Society’s current statistics (2011) indicate that the risk factor for American males is 1 out of every 2 men will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their life, and for women it is slightly better: 1 out of every 3! That is outrageous. What could account for this wealthy, educated, industrial nation having such an unhealthy track record?

Folks the common factor here is our lifestyle: we eat unhealthy foods containing artificial ingredients and preservatives, Americans consume more sugar per capita than ever before, there are toxic chemicals and other pollutants in our water, soil, and air, we don’t get enough exercise or sleep, we live in a very stressful fast-paced society, more of our population works indoors that ever before which lessens our exposure to Vitamin D from the sunlight. And then for good measure, certainly there is the factor for genetic predisposition for certain types of cancer. There is evidence that years of suppresed negative emotions/response to stress trigger bio-chemical responses which can begin a cycle for unhealthy cell deterioration and the beginning of cancer. Read that last sentence again!

If you are/were a cancer patient, when was the last time that you heard your doctor mention any of this to you? Have you asked their professional opinion about these things before? Will you PLEASE ask them about it soon? We need to do our homework. We need to be proactive with regard to our treatment/cure. There is a lot of good information available about cancer prevention and treatment. Some alternative treatments can be used in conjuction with traditional Western Medicine treatments, which will help strengthen your body and especially your immune system, as you go through your treatment. I am not a doctor, and I am not suggesting that you follow a particular protocol. I am not saying we should ignor our physicians recommendations. Just don’t nod your head and be lead like a sheep…

For many cancer survivors, the hardest part is trying not to live in fear. After the cancer has been treated and tests indicate that it is gone, there can often be a lingering concern that it may return. Unfortunately, for many cancer patients, it does just that. Once again, it becomes difficult to maintain a positive outlook, especially when you thought the nightmare was over.

If this is the case with you, it is certainly time to look into the situation deeper. There are physiological factors that are often at fault when cancer returns, but this may not be the sole reason. If you are curious about the part YOU play in this return of cancer, check out this link for yourself: http://www.alternative-cancer-care.com/The_Cancer_Personality.html Whatever you decide to do, do not lose hope; do not give up! If you give up, you will have NO chance at survival. Your will to live is very important! God bless you.

there are studies that, cannabis reduces tumors in head, neck and breast & lung cancers. that explains to me why the gov’t will hunt down the average land owning citizen and kill them and take all they own from their widows and orphans for simply using. No, what they die from is when the Prostate Cancer spreads to other parts of the body and metastizes.
I know several neighbors who died from Prostate Cancer that spread. I had mine treated. No one will convince me that watchful waiting is better, especially if you are in your 50′s, 60′s or early to mis 70′s that watchful waiting is better. Probably the best treatment for early stage Prostate Cancer is Radio Surgery via Cyberknife. No physical cutting in five painless sessions in less that 2 weeks with almost no side effects.

An industry this immense has one goal – self preservation. A cure for cancer would mean its demise. The American Cancer Society, for example, collects hundreds of millions per year, for several years now. Where are the results? Where does all the money go? There are no cures from their research. It’s business as usual, year after year.

If you believe that conventional medicine wants a cure for cancer…you’ll also believe in the tooth fairy. You are never told the truth about cancer deaths. Death from cancer is on a rapid rise. It has now overtaken heart disease as America’s # 1 killer. More people are dying of cancer now than ever before, and nothing is slowing the increase. Not early detection, not better screenings, not new high tech machines, not radiation, not surgery, and definitely not chemotherapy.
Are you ever told that the five (5) year survival rate after chemo treatment, for all cancers combined, is 2.1%. (Published in the journal Clinical Oncology in December 2004)

The buzz words are: Making progress, early detection, new drug, cure around the corner, etc. Most people have been brainwashed to just rollover, and accept this rhetoric.

If you do the research, you’ll find that there are many natural protocols that cure cancer. They never tell you that Europe, China, and other countries are far ahead of the U.S. in the prevention and cure of cancer. Those therapies that are successful in other countries are not allowed in the U.S.
So much for physicians trying to heal you and the FDA protecting you.

Have you ever heard of Dr Leonard Coldwell, Dr. Tullio Simoncini, Dr. Stan Burzynski, Dr. Max Gerson, and many more brilliant men whose motivation wasn’t money. Most of you haven’t even heard of these doctors, because their research, information and results are ridiculed and suppressed by mainstream media, FDA, Cancer Research Institute, Big Phama, etc.

The above names were not people whose first goal was to make personal fortunes and lock their discoveries away from those who wanted to copy them. The pharmaceutical industry has what can only be described as a monopoly on cancer treatment in this country.

Go ahead…Google their names, do the research, and discover the truth about cancer.
You may need the information one day.
